Revert "copilot" button being in navbar

Please revert this.. who are we kidding? This is an utterly useless change and I would like to be able to use and see my profile instead of a stupid AI bot I have no interest in looking at. It provides no utility and if I wanted to get my dose of sludge I'm not using GitHub... especially not the navbar

I personally use(d) the profile tab every single day. I primarily use the mobile app for checking my notifications, and I have two accounts I switch between. Having the profile tab on the bar made it trivial to check both:

1. Open app, which defaults to the Notifications tab
2. Glance at profile tab to see what account I am currently on (pending https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/174678 being fixed, until then I have to tap the profile tab then back for it to load)
3. Check notifications
4. Long press on the profile tab to switch account
5. Check other account's notifications

All without having to actually change tab.

With this change all that easy context switching is now gone. Instead my workflow has to be:

1. Open app, which defaults to the Notifications tab
2. Switch to the Home tab to see what user I am logged in as
3. Switch back to Notifications
4. Check notifications
5. Switch back to Home
6. Long press on the profile button to switch account
7. Switch back to Notifications
8. Check other account's notifications

Plus now when I am on any screen other than Home, including notifications or browsing a repo, I can't see what user I am acting as. This is a huge usability downgrade.

If you have to have Copilot be its own tab why not replace Explore, and move that to Home instead? I personally never use Explore and also don't see it being likely that users need a quick way to access it. Going through Home for that would likely be a fine UX.

I second the Explore tab being pretty redundant on mobile, and would like to see it as an item in the Home tab.

Surely this can't be a minority position right? I thought most people use GitHub to get stuff done, not doomscroll popular repos and see who followed who, nor consume unethically sourced probabilistic word predictor slop. 😕 Seems like a very tone-deaf and greedy marketing move.

codeberg has been a phenomenal alternative. it's obejectively worse in many ways but migrating was a breeze and at least i feel like i have agency as opposed to GitHub where they seem to give more agency to their pet AI project over anyone else 🫠

I strongly disagree. Me and many other people used the profile tab beer daily but it's been turned into this useless button that basically nobody wants. As much as I want Copilot entirely gone, I'll settle for the button being hidden again.

It is telling that they force copilot upon us and won't let us hide it.

This is one of the most annoying things ever. There are so many trivial missing features in the GitHub mobile app, for example profile management/edit and pinning repositories.
The user experience just feels incomplete.
The last thing the community asked is to keep it incomplete, but add some slop copilot, even for users who opted it off on the browser version.
The PR with ads was rolled back, so please rollback this also, and prioritize making the app somewhat usable.

Personally, I like the new feature, because I was using Github Web version to use Copilot..
I just want adding the feature to continue the agent sessions..like web version..

The feature has been available in the mobile app for a long time. It just wasn't this obnoxiously obtrusive before and could be disabled, which is what this thread is about.

Before update: Copilot floater (could be disabled), useful Profile button on navbar	After update: useful Profile button gone, replaced with permanent Copilot that can't be hidden

Completely agree with the feedback here. The profile tab was one of the most frequently used parts of the mobile app and replacing it with Copilot is a real usability downgrade.

The core issue is that this change prioritizes feature promotion over actual workflow. The profile tab served critical functions that Copilot simply does not replace:

• Instant account identity visibility at a glance
• Quick account switching without navigating away
• Direct access to your own activity and contributions

What would actually satisfy both sides here is a simple toggle in settings, exactly like the floating Copilot button had before. Users who want Copilot in the navbar keep it. Users who don't can restore the profile tab. That is a zero-compromise solution.

The point @simon-abbott raised about multi-account workflows is especially valid. When you are managing two accounts, losing persistent identity visibility from the navbar is not a minor inconvenience, it actively breaks a daily workflow.

Also worth noting what @GreemDev flagged: the button ignores your existing Copilot opt-out settings from github.com. That is the part that really needs fixing regardless of the navbar debate. If a user has explicitly opted out of Copilot on the web, that preference should be respected everywhere including mobile.

The ads rollback was the right call. A toggle for this would be the right call too.

yeah, and that setting used to be there before this update. until they revert this, i'm staying on 1.250.0

This used to be disabled in my mobile app specifically. The fact that it was added in a way I cannot disable doesn't make me more likely to use it, it makes me less likely to use github at all. When I do use a programming agent, it is not and will never be Copilot. Copilot is the least useful, full stop. If you wanted to offer custom integrations, that might be worth it. If not, stop trying.

At least make it a setting. Looking in settings for a way to turn it off was the first thing I did when I saw the new feature, and the second was to come here to report feedback.
