Git LFS (Large File Storage) is an extension for Git that helps you manage large files more efficiently.

What problem does it solve?

Git is not designed to handle large binary files (like videos, images, datasets, or models) very well. Storing such files directly in a repository can:

• Slow down cloning and fetching
• Increase repository size significantly
• Make version control inefficient

How Git LFS works

Instead of storing large files directly in your Git repository:

• Git LFS stores a small pointer file in the repository
• The actual large file is stored separately on a remote server (e.g., GitHub LFS storage)

When you clone or pull the repository:

• Git downloads the pointer files
• Git LFS automatically fetches the real large files

Example use cases

• Machine learning datasets or models
• High-resolution images or videos
• Game assets
• Large design files

Basic workflow

1. Install Git LFS

2. Track large file types:

   git lfs track "*.zip"
   

3. Add and commit files as usual:

   git add .
